If you have been to weddings before, you know that everyone waits to hear the toast that the best man offers for the bride and groom. The most successful speeches are the ones that mix humor and sentiment in equal measures. You can start off by writing down some of your thoughts about the bride and groom and your relationship to them. You might say, “The bride has been quite generous in lending her new husband to his friends for so long, we just hope that it doesn’t stop once you get back from your honeymoon.”
You can reflect on your friendship with the groom and your feelings when he asked you to be his best man. You can also talk about how the groom was before he met his bride. You can say something like, “I knew the groom was head over heels in love when he chose to attend a Tupperware party with his fiancé instead of the Super bowl bash that the guys have every year.” That should get a laugh or two from the guests.
If you yourself are married, you might think about any marital advice that you can give the new couple such as, “Whatever your wife says, she is right!” You can add anecdotes about the groom’s past, what you expect for his future, and if you are not married, how you hope to someday meet a woman that makes you as happy as the bride has made the groom.
It is good to start out by introducing yourself. You might say, “Hi, if I could just get everyone’s attention for just a moment.” This can break the ice and from there you can introduce yourself and begin your toast. Remember, no one expects you to wax poetic about the couple, but they would like to hear a heartfelt toast that goes straight to the heart. You can be sure you have made a success of your speech if you see the guests reaching for their hankies.
